It’s an Olivier award winning hit musical. It has dazzled audiences internationally and has been running in the West End of London for years. It features songs by Grammy and Tony award winning artist Cyndi Lauper. And now Kinky Boots comes to Edinburgh, in all of its glamorous glory.

Christmas shows are always something special here and each theatre’s big show is a major event. So, Edinburgh Playhouse made a splash with a glitzy launch celebrating the upcoming December 10th to January 5th, presentation of the touring production. It’s a family show of sorts in that it’s deemed suitable for ten and above – in fact, it’s recommended for young people, given its central themes of inclusivity, authenticity and acceptance.

The launch at trendy Brewhemia featured a fantastic number with three of the cast singing and dancing to joyful, ebullient perfection in full drag. This was followed by an interview with the actor-singer-dancers, who told us that most of the company had never performed in drag before getting the Kinky Boots job, with the production team needing to focus on casting experienced musical theatre performers, adept at the kind of athletics involved in a eight high octane shows a week.

But we’re told it’s not all about heels and lipstick – nor is it quite as kinky as its title might suggest (you can bring your teengers and grannies, chances are they’ll love it). The story is one of a father and son relationship, tender and at times emotionally stirring. It’s also peppered with plenty of foot-stomping, rousing numbers and we were reliably informed that the show receives nightly standing ovations – not least as the audience succumbs to the need to dance.

Tickets are on sale now and if the pattern elsewhere has been anything to go by, are likely to be snapped up quickly by locals and festive visitors.
