When the government pass a decree banning all comedic speech, under the threat of arrest a rebel band of comedians must use everything but their voices to make you laugh. This experimental sketch show for a technological ‘Fake News’ era is brought to Edinburgh by Cambridge Footlights’ regular, who will be around for the Fringe.

Jessica Murdoch, one of the cast, spoke with The Fountain about the premise of the show and her elation about coming to Edinburgh for the Fringe for the first time.

TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting?

Very exciting! It will be my first time in Scotland, let alone at the fringe, so I am buzzing big time!

TF: Speechless certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?

A Speechless Bill has been put in place which bans all comic speech as a means of limiting free-speech (which authorities believe have potential to rouse trouble). However, a group of extremely attractive comedic rebels are fighting against the act by performing comedy which involves no speech (but lots of tech, physicality, and silliness) and continuing to spread laughter through secret shows!

TF: And sum up in one sentence why we should come see Speechless over any other show?

It is unlike any other comedy show that you will come across at the Fringe, and is a wonderful, silly, and uplifting way to spend an hour of your life!

TF: What are your plans for the Fringe, have you been before?

No I haven’t! I am obviously buzzing about performing and seeing other great shows at the Underbelly, and also hoping to see lots of other cracking drama, meet new interesting people and party on down with old pals, and maybe eat a deep-fried Mars Bar?

TF: And what are your future plans beyond Speechless?

Hopefully it won’t be the end of the Speechless journey! It went down really well in Cambridge and London, so it would be great to continue to perform the show in more venues! I am also hoping to carry on acting and creating theatre in general, and hopefully get a degree while I am at it!
