HM Johnsen is an experimental alternative artist from Norway who compels admiration and respect in equal measure. At the tender age of 23 he is already an accomplished guitarist, singer, writer and composer, and has just released another single, Serenity. The Fountain caught up with Hm to discuss Serenity in more detail.

TF: You have a new single out, what has the reception been like to Serenity

The reception has all in all been very good! I have gotten a lot of positive feedback around the production quality and the lyrics. I was very excited releasing this song, a big reason for it being that I have kind off changed my genre and changed my style of writing and producing. I think that listeners and fans where positively «shocked» with me going from the blues/rock world, to this. For me it’s finally good to start a new and exciting chapter in my music-career.

TF: How would you sum it up in one sentence?

Welcome to my new world of sounds and vibes.

TF: Such a great track, where did you get your influences from for this one?

The writing process happened very fast. I was sitting on the tram in Berlin, where I was living at the time of recording and making the demos. I got this generalized view of just all the people glued to their phones and screens. I particularly took notice of this kid, just being addicted to keeping himself occupied, and not staring out the window or to making eye contact with other people! I sometimes fall in this trap myself, as I think we all do sometimes. I was on my way to the studio I was renting, and I started writing this song. I found the word Serenity…. and I was trying to write a message about the fact that it’s important to not always be productive and busy. We need to be humans once in a while too. Musically the song is inspired of a bit Red Hot Chilli Peppers, with some modern Pink Floyd-ish vibes maybe… I don’t know, it just became what it is now. I have tried to make the track sound like a smooth, pop-ish ballad.

TF: What is your plan for the remainder of the year, after this single release, can we look forward to an EP, LP?

I was planning a tour in the UK together with my booking-agent before this Corona thing popped up, so that’s not gonna happen. But, fear not! My new EP is coming out late this summer! Serenity is actually the title-track of the EP, so this song along with four more are on their way to the streaming-platforms, and should be out in August! Hopefully we will get to go on a tour late this year, or next year. Let’s all hope this situation goes over as quickly as possible.
