It’s the season of cutting carbs, hitting it hard at the gym, and shaving everything from the chin down. Summer has rocked up barely) and the media has us thinking about how our bodies aren’t up to scratch and there are companies ready to capitalise on that. We’ve been shamed, dehumanised, and humiliated for how we look and we’ve had enough. Join The Roaring Girls for a defiantly feel-good show, Beach Body Ready, which questions a lot that the media suggest we should look for the summer months. Shaunagh from The Roaring Girls discussed the show in more depth with The Fountain along with what drove the project.

TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting is that?

It’s very exciting. Edinburgh Fringe is one of the most unique and special experiences as a theatre maker, and we have had a lot of support to get us there as a company.

TF: Beach Body Ready certainly sounds interesting, what is the premise?

Beach Body Ready is a show which smashes through ingrained fears around body image and beauty standards, as we have created something, which is authentic to our experiences as women. All the stories you will hear are (worryingly) true, and we want audiences to leave feeling a bit better about their bodies.

TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?

The show came about after the three fat ones in the company were all in the back of a Ford Fiesta. It was a squeeze to fit us all in and we ended up having the most joyful chat about our bodies and we knew we had to make a show about it. We’ve talked to different communities, different people with different experiences to us and found that so much of our personal stories resonate in different ways to a much wider audience.

TF: Have you been to the Fringe before, is there anything you are keen to see whilst in Edinburgh?

Individually we have all been to the fringe at different points over the last ten years, but this is the first time we have been up as The Roaring Girls. There are loads of shows we want to see while we are up there, and we’ve been having a chat on Twitter with lots of companies who are heading up. There is such a wonderful buzz amongst companies who are all being supportive of each other, which is exactly what the Fringe should be all about. We also reference a few shows in the back of our free zine, which are on a similar wavelength for those who want to carry on the conversation.

TF: And what are your future plans beyond Beach Body Ready?

After a good nap post-Fringe, we want to make a show about all the things you didn’t get taught about periods. The irregularities, the nitty gritty, talking about (in)fertility and the various uses of a tampon.

The Roaring Girls performs Beach Body Ready at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at Pleasance Courtyard (Pleasance Above) from Thursday 1st August – Monday 26th August at 1.10pm.
