Winner: Pinder Prize, 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The Edinburgh Fringe debut from one of Australia’s most exciting comedians, Sam Taunton. He is about for the month of August with new show, It’s Nice, It’s Modern. Sam spoke with The Fountain about the influences behind the show, and his plans for his debut.

TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how excited are you?

Very excited! It’s my debut Edinburgh show so it could go two ways: either I’m embraced by the UK audiences and celebrated as next in line to the Adam Hills throne, OR I’m banished as a convict on the first ship back to Australia, never to perform stand up on your island ever again.

TF: It’s Nice, It’s Modern certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?

My show is called It’s Nice, It’s Modern and basically centres around my Dad’s 1988 country music album called Straight From The Shoulder. Also I saw two parking inspectors making out which I think is pretty funny!

TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?

It started at Adelaide Fringe where I performed in a tent for a month. On one side of my tent was a magician and on the other side was the wood chopping competition. The sound bleed was so bad you could everything going on outside and if the wood chopping competition was close audiences members would leave to go and watch that.

After 4 weeks of that process I emerged with this show.

TF: What are your plans for the Fringe, having been before are there any tips or musts you would offer to first-time performers?

I’ve been to Edinburgh two years ago but never performed. It’s much bigger than Australian Fringe festivals, I’m scared and no one is giving me tips! I need tips! So far the only advice I’ve had has been from Australian comedian Nath Valvo who said “Scottish and English people will hate you” so who knows what that means!

TF: And what are your future plans beyond It’s Nice, It’s Modern?

To keep doing stand up and hopefully returning to Edinburgh each year with a new hour that will entertain the masses. Oh, and take Adam Hills’ job as the only Australian comedian in the UK.

You can see Sam Taunton: Its Nice, Its Modern at Assembly George Square, Studio 4 from 3rd – 25th August at 19:40. For tickets, please visit www.edfringe.com
