Ziggy Stardust takes us on a Tragical Mystery Tour through the life of a nearly-was rock star! Drama, tragedy and hilarity ensue to a live rocking backdrop. Lee Jones brings A Rock n Roll Suicide to Edinburgh this August, which sheds light on some of the more bizarre choices of our would-be hero, all whilst hurtling through this life of crazed adventure. Lee spoke with The Fountain about the show in more depth.
TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting?
Hi Keira, so excited! Cannot wait, my second year putting on a solo show?? Utter stress! I know, I’m not right! The Zoo(Southside) Studio is the Venue I totally wanted!! So I’m thrilled. The show A Rock n Roll Suicide! is mind blowing (even if I say so myself).
Its from the Council estates of Kidderminster to Beverley Hills and back? It also featuring a special guest appearance by the legend that is Chris Thorpe, as the voice of Mr. Punch, the puppet of truth. I am so pumped!!!
TF: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide! certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?
Ziggy Stardust takes us on a tragical Mystery Tour through the life of a nearly- was- Rock star, Gypsy Lee Pistolero, AKA Lee Mark-Jones! This one man-show plays out against a backdrop of videos and scenes from his early life, our jaded, ageing rocker sings along with his young pretty self and belts out songs from Punk to the Present, from an initially glamtastic, then tragic Rock N Roll career.
It’s a tale of anarchy, rage, sadness and laughter. It’s a struggle between damnation and salvation. It is a story of a man who comes to terms with himself after the diagnosis of a condition that unknown to defined his life.
Co-starring Lemmy, Slash, Axl Rose, Blondie, Joey Ramone and Joan Jett amongst others.
TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?
It is an autobiographical journey through my life, the retelling of the ‘nearly-was’ pop star? It’s all true! Raw, brutal, honest, hilarious, tragic, poignant and hopefully entertaining. Musicians, music lovers, especially those into rock/punk music will love it. All true unheard stories from and about Lemmy, Axl Rose, Joan Jett, Blondie, the Ramones and more. Its my story, as someone who toured and lived with them in the Rock ‘n’ Roll circus. Now in later years after discovering I have ADHD, a borderline personality disorder and autism, I look back at how it affected my choices and life. It’s just a Shakespearian tragedy, only real, it pulls no punches. Google Gypsy Pistoleros and Gypsy Lee Pistolero to witness the end of a car crash rock n roll career.
I’m quoted as saying this about theatre and I believe in it!! “I intend to attract a new kind of audience which does not usually go to the theatre; an audience craving strange journeys of darkness, horror, suspense, and wonder. All these thrills we will provoke into life, in the flesh, breathing and bleeding on stage, and right in your face.”
TF: What are your plans for the Fringe, having been before are there any tips or musts you would offer to first-time performers?
Concentrate on your show first and foremost, just be brilliant! Everything else is secondary. Im staying at the Campsite Edinburgh Festival Camping, which is brilliant. Means you can escape the madness and treat the Month almost like a holiday too! Hang out at the Banshee Labyrinth, that is cool & rocking. Go visit the Childrens Toy Museum, Arthurs Seat, the old cemetery… Do all of the tourist stuff!!! Just make sure you nail your show!
TF: And what are your future plans beyond A Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide!?
I have a film coming out, The Manson Family Massacre (2019) in August on Northbank Entertainment (Via Sony) so it will be in Tesco, Morrisons, etc. I do quite a few horror films, love them!!! Mostly I play nutters??? Pandamonium (Mycho ) is coming out in September too, I play a coked up high flying lawyer, tragic end.
I hope that A Rock n Roll Suicide! has a fantastic life though. If China Plate (Ed) pick it up, I hope it tours for a couple of years? I do improv and freshen it up every show, no show is the same? So come see all 25 at the Fringe?? LOL!
I also begin a live Art/ Jodorowsky/ Panic Movement/ style Acid Western show next year with my mate and great actor Rock Salt. Will be a really messed up immersive piece, i.e Dwarfs in chariots pulled by goats, a freakshow circus, crucifixion, gunfights etc!!
You can see A Rock n Roll Suicide! at Zoo Southside from 6th – 26th August at 21:00. For tickets, please visit www.edfringe.com
