She’s hot, rich and powerful. She knows bad things are happening. But she’s making millions selling her line of shoes at Bloomingdale’s, Jared’s voice is as soothing as ASMR and her kids keep her busy. Does she have the balls to shape the future? A meditation on heroism starring an alternate version of America’s first daughter, from multi award-winning NYC company Snowy Owl, IvankaPlay is at the Fringe this August, and writer Charles Gershman spoke with The Fountain about the play in more depth.

TF: Are you excited to be performing at the Fringe this year?

So excited. We’re bringing a show that is an act of political resistance, in addition to being entertaining. It feels gratifying.

TF: What is the premise of your show?

Ivanka wrestles with the morality of who she is and what she’s doing in the world. It’s a meditation on heroism and an exploration of the heroic impulse that may or may not be inside her.

TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?

The show was driven by an impulse to put a personal fantasy on stage. I’ve been really inspired recently by solo shows by David Leddy, Crystal Skillman, and Chris Thorpe.

TF: Have you been to the Fringe before, is there anything you are keen to see whilst in Edinburgh?

I can’t wait to see inspiring work by other artists there. I love hanging around Summerhall. I’m excited to support some friends who will also have shows, including Dmitri Barcomi, whose Heresy Machine (at Greenside) is super exciting. There are some great shows this summer by fellow New York artists, including America is Hard to See (by Life Jacket Theatre) and Monsoon Season (by Lizzie Vieh and All for One).

TF: And what are your future plans?

I have a workshop of a new play called Stopover happening in the U.S. in autumn and an upcoming residency with the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico, where I’ll be working on a few things, including an exciting television project.

IvankaPlay will be at Underbelly, Cowgate, from 1st – 25th August (Not 14th) at 13:50. For tickets, go to www.edfringe.com
