Smart and funny observations on a new-found, middle-class lifestyle with ski holidays, through the prism of poor, immigrant, living-in-a-caravan roots. As seen on The One Show (BBC), Fake Reaction (ITV), Celebrity Squares (ITV), Patrick Monaghan is taking his show, Started from the Bottom, Now I’m Here, to Edinburgh’s Fringe performing at the Gilded Balloon Teviot. Patrick spoke with The Fountain about bringing his own experiences into his comedy.
TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting?
It’s always exciting, even though I go up every year, it just gets better each time! It’s like that famous Nietzsche quote, “if it doesn’t kill you the first year of doing the Edinburgh Festival you will only keep going back every year until you get banned from the city or a meteorite hits the town, a day before August”.
I genuinely do get excited about going up to perform at the festival, and that excitement only dwindles a little after 17 sore throats and 82 shows at the festival. But I’m so much more mentally and physically prepared as I now only focus on doing my solo show which is at 8pm every night, while the rest of the day i do things like eating, sleeping and recharging.
TF: Started from the Bottom, Now I’m Here certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?
It’s about my real life, from flash backs to growing up as a child from a poor immigrant family coming to the UK to where I am today in my life. It’s still full of my observations and upbeat comedy but it’s also full of more real life and personal observations about myself and about things I would never have talked about before in public never mind on a comedy stage.
TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?
I’m getting older and even though that sounds cliched I feel so much more relaxed and comfortable talking about my life now. In my childhood and youth I was embarrassed about talking about it. also I spent most of my early life trying to blend in, even though we were foreigners, arriving from the Middle East, living in a caravan for most of my teenage years.
TF: What are your plans for the Fringe, having been before are there any tips or musts you would offer to first-time performers?
Enjoy it, enjoy it, and enjoy it. Soak it up, throw yourself into it. You might be over whelmed by all the madness thats going on around you, but just remember this only happens for one month every year for the rest of your life.
TF: And what are your future plans beyond 2019?
I will be running out this brand new stand up show Started at the Bottom, Now I’m Here then it will go on a big tour around the UK in the autumn 2019 and then spring 2020.
Ive also got a brand new comedy special coming out on line, on my website and on DVD this year of my last UK comedy tour of my stand up show called #Goals.
And I’m also realising a new podcast called Comedian Without Brders which will be on all the platforms where you can download podcasts on. If this is all too much to take in at once, then sign up to my mailing list on my website.
You can see Started from the Bottom, Now I’m Here at Gilded Balloon Teviot from 31st July – 25th August (not 14th) at 20:00. For tickets, please visit https://tickets.edfringe.com
