El’Vee are an Afropop duo, which consists of twin sisters Lilian and Vivian Nwaneho. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, yet grew up in Reading, UK, their love for music, drew them back and forth to Nigeria, and as independent artists, they have been opportune to work with some renowned musicians like Don Jazzy, Sarz, Tiwezi just to name a few. Lil and Viv spoke with The Fountain about their new single My Butter and the joy of working independently.
TF: A new single, how exciting, what has the reception been like so far?
Lil: Yes, it’s very exciting for us. This song is dear to our hearts. The reception has been positive so far, not as much as we would like as we want more people to hear this song and the message and also love it like we do, especially whilst creating it. So we’re still pushing it definitely to attain that reach that it deserves.
TF: What inspired you to title it My Butter?
Viv: Its really due to the message of the song. My Butter is an inspirational record and we’re trying to pass on a message of not giving up to ourselves and our audience. Also the phrase My Butter in Nigeria is a metaphor that is commonly used to symbolise good life, wealth and riches, so it fits our message.
And will you be promoting this with a list of exciting tour dates?
Lil: We would definitely love to. However, it’s not always easy for independent artists like us to get on tours or gigs especially when the vast majority are still yet to know your songs. So hopefully someone out there will read this and give us a shout to come perform somewhere. We would love that.
Where has been your favourite gig to date?
Viv: Performing at the 2017 Gidifest Festival in Lagos Nigeria. It was our first festival performance and the energy and vibe from the crowd was exhilarating.
What has it been like to be working with B.O.S.S. Recordz?
Lil: B.O.S.S Recordz is our outfit that we release all our music from. It’s an acronym for Beyond Our Struggles Success, which is a message we want to resonate in the minds of our audience through our music and story. Its definitely amazing and freeing to be able to release music independently via B.O.S.S Recordz.
