Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird, one of the hottest new exports to come out of Melbourne, Australia in recent years will release their debut UK single Love is Heartbreak on 12th April via Double Drummer /AWAL. Lead vocalist, Lachy Rose, spoke with The Fountain about the band name and what to expect from their debut single.
TF: A new single release, how exciting, what can we expect from Love is Heartbreak?
It’s a real kaleidoscope. I was deeply sad when I wrote it and somehow it made sense to turn all the feeling into sunshine-and-rainbows candy disco pop. Think Scott Walker singing over the Avalanches.
TF: I am sure you get asked this all the time but being called Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird, do you have a cousin Tony?
I have like twenty cousins but sadly no Tony’s. But I like the familiarity of it. Anyone could have a Cousin Tony. I guess that’s the point.
TF: Are you performing in Scotland anytime soon, will we have the pleasure?
WE WISH! We’re heading to the UK in May and I would kill to include a Glasgow and Edinburgh stint. I travelled there when I was studying music and was blown away. Some of the music the students at Glasgow Conservatoire were making still echoes in my mind. I also had this particular haggis in Edinburgh that I’m keen to attend to once again.
TF: What else can we expect this year from the band, a new EP, or LP?
Love is Heartbreak is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a whole LP rolling out behind it. It’s called New Romancer and we’re dang proud of it. We’ll be touring it as much as possible.
TF: What has been your favourite gig to date?
Our first ever show was supporting Matt Corby in a church. That was terrifying but a special way to start. We also played a New Years festival last year called Beyond The Valley. There was such an intense storm that rolled in during our show that lightning actually struck the campsite next to us. I still maintain that we summoned the lightning using the power of high voltage indie rock.
