Luminelle Recordings is pleased to announce new signing Jackie Mendoza, and present her new single, De Lejos. Born and raised in San Diego, Jackie Mendoza’s been influenced by the geography and personal experiences from her hometown, as well as the culture of her motherland, Tijuana, Mexico. She grew up listening to Latin pop songs, and thus, sings in both Spanish and English, blending Latin-driven dance beats, electronic pop, and colourful soundscapes.
TF: A new single release, how exciting, what can we expect from De Lejos?
De Lejos is a song about a long distance relationship. The lyrics (to anyone who can understand them) are very straight-forward. It’s the story about how I met my girlfriend and how we spent our first year together miles apart. I think people expected my first single from the EP to be a dance banger but it’s the opposite of that, haha. It’s a slow-paced ukulele ballad with sporadic electronic sounds and a minimal beat.
TF: And you are releasing it via Luminelle Recordings, how have they been to work with?
Luminelle is great! Everyone in the team is really involved, which makes me really excited to release music with them. I’m also a big fan of their musicians and projects they’ve released. I think it’s a really good fit for me.
TF: Will you be working on an EP or LP this year, what more can we expect from you in 2019?
I’m releasing my first EP in April this year and I’m already working on an LP. If everything goes according to plan, I’ll release that in 2020.
TF: Are you promoting this single with a tour, when can we indulge in seeing you perform live?
I’ll be touring after the release of the EP but can’t confirm any of those dates as of yet. I’m playing at SXSW in March and have some New York shows planned for now.
TF: What has been your favourite gig to date?
My favorite gig was playing Villette Sonique in Paris last year. I got to see Smerz, Sassy 009, Kelly Lee Owens, and Jon Hopkins; it was crazy to be a part of a lineup that I really liked. My parents flew there from San Diego to see me play and I was able to meet my manager, Walter, for the first time.
