Fun Kids is the UK’s children’s radio station for kids, families and parents. The station, offering a mix of ‘music, games and silliness for six to twelve year olds,’ began broadcasting digitally seven years ago, and has built to have hundreds of thousands of weekly listeners, winning some of the most prestigious broadcast awards along the way. Now, for the first time, they are taking their show off the waves and onto the stage.
Bex and Dan from Fun Kids spoke with The Fountain about taking the show to Edinburgh as well as their desires whilst in Edinburgh.
TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting?
Oh, we’re ridiculously excited. We’ve already highlighted all the shows we want to see in the Fringe brochure.
TF: Your show certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?
We’re a children’s radio station, and we’re taking the show on the road! Unfortunately, the road doesn’t really want us and the whole thing keeps going wrong. Luckily we have excellent audiences who are ready to help us out!
TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?
The Edinburgh Fringe has always been in our sights as a perfect place to take a live Fun Kids show, and everything just came together this year. There’s so many great children’s shows out there – Funz and Gamez, Dick and Dom, Paddington Bear’s First Concert – and we want to join in the fun!
TF: Have you been to the Fringe before, is there anything you are keen to see whilst in Edinburgh?
Although we’ve visited in previous years, this is our first time as performers, so it’ll be interesting to see the festival from that perspective. Bex is keen to see as much comedy as possible. Dan is keen to see how many deep-fried Mars Bars he can eat.
TF: And what are your future plans beyond your show?
If it goes well- who knows?! We’re angling for a nation-wide arena tour of the UK, very similar to Beyonce’s recent gigs. Or perhaps, y’know, we’ll be lucky enough to be able to perform the show when we’re back in London in September for any listeners who didn’t make it up to Scotland.
