TV magician Ben Hanlin returns to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a brand new show, 50, for the month of August to Pleasance King Dome, directed by Rohan Acharya.
Ben spoke with The Fountain about returning to Edinburgh, the premise of his show and encourages new performers to attend show after show.
TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting?
Yep, I spent last August with the blues as I wasn’t at the Fringe. Can’t wait to come back for another month!
TF: The show certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?
Simple – fifty tricks in fifty minutes! It’s a complete spectrum of magic, twists on some iconic tricks and a lot of magic that I love that a lot of people haven’t seen before.
TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?
It started with wanting to create a show that was as different as possible to my last show, Trickhead, I was really happy with that show back in 2016 but it only had about eight tricks. I thought a show with fifty tricks will bring something really fresh! Also there is loads of magic that I have always loved but never performed because it doesn’t fit my style and in this show I get to explore all of that.
TF: What are your plans for the Fringe, having been before are there any tips or musts you would offer to first-time performers?
It’s obvious but go and see show after show after show….As a performer you obviously learn a lot after a month of shows, but you also start thinking about things differently after being exposed to such a diverse mix of creativity. It’s fantastic!
Also – bring a rain coat and an umbrella!!!!
TF: And what are your future plans beyond The Fringe?
I’ve got some TV work in the pipeline which will hopefully keep me busy in the autumn. I am hoping to take this show on my first UK tour next year!
