Edinburgh born comedian and actor, Douglas Walker, brings his fourth solo show to Edinburgh Fringe, Of Christmas Past, premiering at the Underbelly Bristo Square for the month of August.
Douglas spoke with The Fountain about the premise of the show as well as what inspired the show.
TF: You are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, how exciting?
It is exciting, isn’t it? This will be my 11th time performing at the Fringe in one way or another but every time I still get excited. There’s nowhere quite like Edinburgh in August. So many great shows, and so many people looking for a great show to see. It’s very convenient really.
TF: The show certainly sounds intriguing, what is the premise?
The show is a theatrical narrative comedy documentary about the sinister and secret origins of Santa Claus. I’d say it is probably the best theatrical narrative comedy documentary at the Fringe this year, and in the top three shows about the sinister and secret origins of Santa Claus.
TF: And what drove the project, where did your influences lie?
Up until now my solo work has all been sketch comedy, but I’m also in the improv troupe Racing Minds, and our Fringe hit show Aaaand Now For Something Completely Improvised involves writing a brand new story every day. I’ve always found that really fun, so decided I would do a narrative this year. Once I found out the crazy history behind Santa, there wasn’t really another story I could tell.
TF: What are your plans for the Fringe, having been before are there any tips or musts you would offer to first-time performers?
My main advice to first-time performers at the Fringe is to go and see as much as you can. The Fringe is a great way to get your comedy seen, but almost more importantly is to see what other people are doing. Nothing motivates and inspires me more than seeing an amazing show. This year I’m really excited to see The Worst by Clara Cupcakes, and The Adventures of The Bearded Lady by Theadora van der Beek
TF: And what are your future plans beyond The Fringe?
Well I’m assuming I’ll be PRETTY famous by the time the Fringe is over, so I’ve blocked out the rest of 2018 for a world tour. Then it will be Christmas, so the perfect time to roll out my new Easter show.
