With the concluding book of Katherine Woodfine’s series, The Sinclair Mysteries, you can expect more from Sophie and Lil in Winter Hall. In The Mystery of the Midnight Peacock, The festive season has come to Sinclair’s and they have been invited to the Midnight Peacock Ball. This is no average party, as this is one very much for the fans of books like the Nancy Drew series. Hideous secrets come to light and Sophie and Lil are more confused than ever with this final mystery in the series. With many twists and turns, this plot will have you unable to put this book down, keen to get to the bottom of the mystery like the detective agency.

The Sinclair’s Mysteries is a quartet of children’s historical mysteries from author Katherine Woodfine. The first book, The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow, was a Waterstones Book of the Month. The fourth and final instalment The Midnight Peacock published in October 2017. Each of the novels is set in Edwardian London and revolves around the fictional department store, Sinclair’s, which is modelled on stores like Selfridges, catering to the more affluent. The series heroines Lilian Rose and Sophie Taylor are employed on the shop floor but often find themselves in amongst criminal activity.

It’s a great romp for those eleven and up and one that will indulge the more inquisitive, a mystery for those that enjoy a good whodunnit. What begins as an invite to the country from their friend Leo ends up with a much more important responsibility as they set out to save the king from assassination and find the culprit. It’s a fun read, with writing that will capture the hearts of those that delve into history, and enjoy a bit of glamour and mystery. If you are looking for accuracy and commentary then steer clear, it’s not intended to do anything other than indulge the minds of confident readers.
